Independent garages are being urged to accelerate their investment in advanced diagnostic technology as vehicles become increasingly software-driven. According to a recent report highlighted by Motor Trade News, specialists at ERCS say modern fault-finding now demands far more than a basic code reader.

With ADAS systems, complex ECUs and hybrid and EV platforms becoming standard, workshops that fail to upgrade their diagnostic capability risk losing work to dealer networks or better-equipped independents. Accurate diagnostics not only reduce misdiagnosis and parts swapping, but also improve workshop efficiency and customer trust.

ERCS stresses that investment should include both high-quality diagnostic tools and ongoing technical training. Access to manufacturer data, secure gateway authorisation and remote diagnostic support are also becoming essential as security protocols tighten across vehicle brands.

For independent garages, the shift represents both a challenge and an opportunity. While equipment and training costs can be significant, workshops that position themselves as technology-competent repairers can command higher labour rates and attract more complex work.
