Electric cars are travelling further than ever, and now even Ferrari is joining the EV revolution

Not long ago, electric cars were mainly associated with short commutes, long charging stops and nervous motorway journeys. Fast forward to 2026 and things look very different.

Today’s latest EVs are now capable of travelling close to 500 miles on a single charge, while charging technology continues to improve at a rapid pace. At the same time, performance brands are embracing electrification too, including Ferrari, which has officially revealed its first fully electric production car.

The result is an EV market that now offers something for everyone, from long-range family cruisers to 1,000bhp electric supercars.

The Rise of the Long-Range EV

One of the biggest barriers to EV ownership has always been range anxiety, the fear of running out of battery before reaching a charger.

However, the newest generation of electric vehicles is helping to eliminate that concern altogether.

Recent rankings of the longest-range electric cars show several models now pushing well beyond the 450-mile mark, with manufacturers focusing heavily on battery efficiency and aerodynamics.

Some of the longest-range EVs expected in 2026 include:

  • BMW iX3 – expected range of around 500 miles
  • Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric – targeting roughly 484 miles
  • Mercedes EQS – still among the longest-distance luxury EVs available
  • Lucid Air Grand Touring – capable of more than 500 miles in some specifications
  • Tesla Model S Long Range – around 500 miles

These figures mean many EV drivers can now complete long motorway journeys with little or no charging required.

Rapid charging has also improved dramatically. Many modern EVs using 800V electrical systems can now add hundreds of miles of range in under 30 minutes, making long-distance electric travel far more convenient than it was only a few years ago.

Ferrari’s Electric Future Begins

While mainstream manufacturers focus on efficiency and practicality, Ferrari has taken a very different approach to electrification.

The Italian supercar brand has officially unveiled the new Ferrari Luce, its first-ever fully electric production model.

And it’s safe to say opinions are divided.

Designed alongside former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his LoveFrom team, the Luce features a futuristic shape unlike anything Ferrari has produced before. The car blends elements of a grand tourer, shooting brake and SUV, with a smooth aerodynamic body designed to maximise efficiency.

Ferrari Luce key figures:

  • 1,035bhp from four electric motors
  • 0-62mph in approximately 2.5 seconds
  • Top speed of more than 190mph
  • 122kWh battery pack
  • Around 329 miles of claimed range
  • Expected UK price of around £440,000

While the Luce cannot match the longest-range family EVs for outright distance, Ferrari says the car was never designed with maximum efficiency in mind.

Instead, the company focused on performance, driver engagement and emotion, qualities traditionally associated with Ferrari’s petrol-powered supercars.

Why the Ferrari Luce Matters

The launch of the Luce is significant for one simple reason: Ferrari has finally accepted that electric power is now a major part of the automotive future.

For years, many enthusiasts believed brands like Ferrari would resist full electrification for as long as possible. However, tightening emissions regulations and advances in battery technology are forcing even the world’s most famous performance brands to adapt.

Ferrari says it has engineered artificial sound systems and unique driving characteristics into the Luce to ensure it still delivers the emotional experience customers expect from the brand.

Reaction online has been mixed, with some praising Ferrari for being bold and innovative, while others argue the design does not look “Ferrari enough”. Investor reaction was also cautious following the unveiling.

But regardless of opinion, the Luce represents a landmark moment for the car industry.

The Future of Electric Motoring

The EV market in 2026 is no longer just about reducing emissions or saving money on fuel.

Electric cars are now becoming genuinely desirable products in their own right, whether that means a 500-mile luxury saloon or a 1,000bhp Ferrari supercar.

And if Ferrari is fully embracing the electric future, it is clear the automotive world has reached a major turning point.
