Ford Fiesta Set for a Shock Return in 2028 – But There’s a Big Twist

For many UK motorists, the Ford Fiesta wasn’t just another car, it was the car. Whether it was a first car, a family runabout, or a sporty hot hatch, the Fiesta became a fixture on British roads for nearly five decades.

When Ford ended Fiesta production in 2023, many drivers were left wondering why one of Britain’s most successful cars had been discontinued. Now, in a move few expected, Ford has revealed plans to bring the Fiesta back in 2028. However, the new model will be very different from the one millions of motorists grew up with.

The Fiesta Is Returning – As An Electric Car

The biggest change is that the next-generation Fiesta will be fully electric. Ford has confirmed that the new model will use technology developed through a partnership with Renault and will be built on the same small EV platform that underpins the highly acclaimed Renault 5 E-Tech.

That means the Fiesta will join a growing list of traditional motoring names being reinvented for the electric age. Renault has already found success by reviving the Renault 5 as a modern electric hatchback, and Ford hopes the Fiesta can repeat that formula.

Why Ford Is Bringing Back The Fiesta

The Fiesta was one of the UK’s most popular cars for decades and remains Britain’s best-selling used car despite ending production nearly three years ago. More than 22 million examples were sold worldwide between 1976 and 2023.

Ford’s European market share has come under pressure in recent years as affordable Chinese electric car brands continue to gain ground. Bringing back a familiar and trusted name could help Ford reconnect with buyers who may have been disappointed by the Fiesta’s disappearance.

Industry analysts believe nostalgia is becoming an increasingly important weapon for established manufacturers as they compete with newer EV brands. Familiar names such as the Renault 5 and Fiat 500 have already demonstrated the appeal of blending heritage styling with modern electric technology.

What Will The New Fiesta Look Like?

Although it will share its underlying platform with Renault, Ford insists the Fiesta will have its own distinctive character.

Early reports suggest designers are taking inspiration from some of the Fiesta’s most beloved performance models, including the legendary XR2i. Expect sporty styling cues, a compact hatchback shape and a design that aims to look unmistakably Ford rather than simply a rebadged Renault.

Ford executives have stated that while the engineering partnership provides the foundations, the company will retain control over the vehicle’s styling, driving dynamics and overall character.

What Range Could Drivers Expect?

Official specifications are still several years away, but the Renault 5 platform currently supports battery packs of around 40kWh and 52kWh. Based on today’s technology, that could give the future Fiesta a real-world range of approximately 200 to 250 miles depending on battery size and driving conditions.

By 2028, battery technology is likely to have improved further, potentially allowing Ford to increase efficiency and range without significantly increasing vehicle size or cost.

Could There Be An Electric Fiesta ST?

One of the biggest questions among enthusiasts is whether Ford will revive the Fiesta ST badge.

While Ford has not announced any performance variants, the company has repeatedly emphasised that future models will retain the brand’s reputation for enjoyable driving dynamics. Industry speculation suggests an electric ST version could eventually appear if demand exists.

Given the popularity of previous Fiesta ST models, many fans will be hoping Ford has something exciting planned.

Will UK Drivers Welcome It Back?

The return of the Fiesta will undoubtedly generate strong opinions. Some motorists will welcome the revival of a beloved nameplate, while others may question whether an electric Fiesta can truly capture the spirit of the petrol-powered original.

However, one thing is certain: Ford clearly believes the Fiesta name still carries enormous value. At a time when many manufacturers are abandoning traditional small cars, the decision to resurrect one of Britain’s most famous hatchbacks is a significant statement.

If Ford can combine affordable pricing, practical electric motoring and the fun-to-drive character that made previous generations so successful, the Fiesta could once again become a familiar sight on UK roads.

The countdown to 2028 has officially begun.
