I guess they have the accident statistics – or perhaps they are assuming that a trailer won’t be as dangerous as long as it stays fixed to the car. Imagine the damage a horse trailer could do.

Coincidentally, talking to someone who has a car registered in Spain, where they Test tow bars, and they must be certified, he had a dickens of a job getting a pass because his Mercedes’ tow bar, which was detachable, had been detached, and they had it as being fitted by the manufacturer (if it was fitted, it must stay fitted!). Mercedes wanted €800 to supply documentation that it was detachable. Or he could have one supplied and fitted by an authorized fitter for about the same. Eventually he talks them into passing it, but it happens every other year or so. I assume here it will be a Tester’s discretion item.
