Service history will corroborate if a petol engine has ever been fitted (highly unlikely!) but I would suggest ringing the MoT station and speaking to the MoT tester who conducted the test.  He might well remember that he tested it as a petrol car then realised his error.  NB Many BMWs and Mercs are ‘quiet’ and as some garage gas analysers are combination units, you can see how such a mistake could have been made.
