at one stage the ministry was accepting an exhaust(however goddam noisy)as long as it had a box of some sort somewhere,dunno if its still the case!as a for instance I passed a combo van a few days back with no boxes just a cat.looked like someone had removed the rear box(the only one it had)cos it wouldn’t fit past the towbar and put a straight pipe in.being a diesel it weren’t particularly noisy especially given the dampening effect of the turbo whose whistling down the exhaust was the only real noise it made.pass and advise…..if its of any interest the rac noise limit for your car to be legal for the road sections of a rally was 105.5 decibel @ 5000rpm free load(generally measured at the council yard at wherever the particular race happened to be) and if you failed you weren’t allowed to compete as the car was not considered to be road legal but as mentioned we as the guys testing this sorta stuff aint got(or require)the gear to measure it.just another loophole to go with the hundreds of others…..
