Hey guys, been quite a while since I dropped in but could do with your expert thoughts on this.
Just bought a cheap car (’03 MB C270CDI) with full MOT, no advisories, for the “too good to be true” price of £795.
Sure enough, the following issues have come up. I’m not bothered by them because they’re all easily fixable / expected maintenance, but can’t help feeling that a reliable tester would have at least advised on them:
* Indicators don’t latch on. They work fine but only if you hold the stalk up or down. Can’t see a fail criteria for that.
* Brake pedal is low but not soft or sinking. By low, I mean about 3/4 of the way to the floor to do anything but firm once you’re there. Does rise if pumped at a standstill but not when moving.
* Definite warped disk feel from (I think) front left. Quite possibly causing the low initial pedal if it’s pushing the pads back? It was advised for fluctuations last year but not on the latest.
* Rear brake pad wear warning on the dash, but about 2mm left on all pads. Pretty sure the warning itself isn’t a fail but surely worth an advisory?
New disks pads & sensors are arriving today btw!
* Once warm, goes into a sort of semi-limp mode. No warning lights but also no turbo, no kickdown, and won’t rev over about 3k rpm. No visible smoke, suspect the EGR valve is stuck closed. Not sure how diesel emissions test works but would the failure to rev fully be a problem for that?
As I say, I’m happy with the deal but given the above, would it be sensible to get my local trusted tester to go over it for the stuff I can’t do on the ground?
