If you’re bringing a UK-registered car back from Spain, you need to make it UK-compliant first (e.g. headlights dipping left, mph speedo, correct fog light). You must then get an MOT before applying to DVLA — this can be done using the VIN or the Spanish registration number. Once you have the MOT and your HMRC/NOVA clearance, you apply to DVLA to re-register the vehicle (usually via V55/5 if required). You can’t tax the car until DVLA issues the UK registration number. Insurance can normally be arranged on the VIN or foreign plate and updated once the UK reg is assigned.
