An interesting puzzle I can’t find the answer to:
I thought I understood that an MOT expiring after March would automatically be extended by 6 months. That has indeed happened to one of our cars.Yet our daughter spoke ysterday to her garage about booking an MOT and the tester said that although there was no need, because she has automatically now got the 6-month extension, when that extension expires her first MOT after that will not last for 12 months but only 6.
That sounds crazy to me, and I can find nothing to confirm it. Yet the tester remained firm that that is what he has been told. His advice was that there was no point in defering the test date by 6 months because the system would catch up and she will need the next MOT in 12 months time regardless.
    Any comments from the experts?

think you might find its bollox, the only info ive seen is that it might be curtailed early if lockdown ends with a 2 week grace period mentioned.dvsa even warned about the gap causing tests to vanish this time next year with an unexpected peak 6mnths later which is at odds with what youve been told.always possible theyve moved the goal posts without telling us tho, wouldnt be the first time!if on the other hand youre a tester in a garage struggling for trade cos of the exemption it makes perfect sense as a statement.drum up trade with no comebacks or fear of being caught for a year if ever merely by testing a car when its actually due for one…..

That’s what I thought, but he seemed so definite I thought I’d check. The Gov website makes no mention of it, but then it doesn’t actually say the next MOT won’t recoup the lost 6m, just leaves the assumption that MOTs always last for 12m.
I can’t see how it would work. Supposing after the 6m extension someone took their car off the road, and then presented for a new MOT after say 1month, 3m, 12m, 5 years, etc – is the system really capable of remembering that 6m are “owing” for ever after?

    It’s hard to think.
