Another customer with a query!

My 1990 car has just failed the MOT (at the main dealership) and I don’t think it should have done! 🙂

An important point to remember is that the same garage passed it last year and nothing has changed since….

Two things:

1. A lambda reading of 1.25
2. Front number plate doesn’t conform to the specified requirements

On #1 my specialist marque engineer has said that as the car is registered in 1990 (and therefore before 1992), the Lambda test should not have been performed and therefore the result is irrelevant.

On #2, it seems to be a matter of subjectivity….the front number plate is a vinyl sticker and the backing and font complies to the standard. I think that the issue is the “vertical as possible”, but haven’t been able to speak to the tester…pic attached.

By the way, the photo was taken with c.200 other 928s, the majority of whom have the same angle number plate!

Hi. Welcome to the forum. Your engineer is correct about the Emmisions test. Sounds like the later criteria has been applied.by the tester, Probably by accident!
Front plate: probably doesn’t comply to construction and use regs. It doesn’t matter how many cars have them fitted!
I’d have to see it for real, but I think it’s borderline for MOT. It certainly could be more vertical.
Return to the station and politely point out their Emmisions error,

Pretty much as KevG replied, 1990 emissins standards do NOT include lambda measurement, just HC & CO.

As for the number plate, from the photo I think the tester had reasonable grounds for failure, the regs requiring the plate to be as near vertical as possible. Has the front bumper been modified from standard, UK spec cars would usually have a recess for the number plate ?

Has the law changed around the number plate?

That’s what the dealership are saying, as to why they passed it last year and the year before! I’m not sure I believe them, having checked on the gov.uk website!

And would you believe that they are still investigating re the Lambda check….?

Grrrr….

Better pic attached with another 928 for comparison…and another from when I first bought it. Is it the vinyl sticker that’s causing the issue?

The MOT rules were significantly changed in May this year. However the requirement for the number plate to be as near vertical as possible is the same as it was pre May. Is the background made of reflective material ?

As for the emissions, ask the tester to

a. Read the Manual

b. Learn to select the correct vehicle age parameters on the emissions equipment.

And c. Ask for an MOT appeal form.

Thanks again, yes, it is the same reflective vinyl you’d see on an E-type or other bonnet mounted reg numbers.

It’s as vertical as I can make it, without making a mounting frame – I’m desperate not to screw anything into the plastic nose…..
