    I had a test fail to turn up today so I had some time to spare.
    After sweeping up I decided to have a browse of the manual on the VTS device to see if I could find any oddities, (as you do).

    Under section 6.3 (registration plates) I found this;

    Method of inspection – On vehicles first registered on or after 1st Jan 1973, check that the registration plates are fixed VERTICALLY, or as close to VERTICAL as is reasonably practical.

    Reason for rejection – A registration plate not fixed VERTICALLY, or as close to VERTICAL as is reasonably practical.

    Now fearing that my failure rate is about to soar to 100%, I’ve fired a mail off to VOSA to enquire weather I should test strictly to the manual or to excersize the dreaded common sense !

    I wonder what the reply will be? (if any)

    I would think that they would need to be vertical , if they were horizontal they wouldn’t be much use would they 😀

    i would think it means that a number plate that is horizontal i.e. flat on top of a boot lid , is no good to anyone.

    It does require a second & third look to make sure you read it right!

    But, as Kev’75 says, the number plate must be vertical & not excessively reclined as on a flat bonnet, etc.

    Viewing the plate from the front or rear, the plate must be perpendicular to the ground surface. Like a wall.

    The wording in the manual could be a little clearer… 😕
