Hi all.

Have an old mini. Austin type. Not bmw.

There is a tiny hole in the sill not far from where the rear wheel arch starts.

My question is…

Is it acceptable to lap weld a patch (entire perimeter of patch) if appearance isn’t an issue or must a new piece of metal be butt welded?

My reasoning is that if I can cut the rot out myself I can save on cost there and also on fabrication time for the new piece. My main concern is getting it roadworthy. it’s no show car.

all we get told is its gotta be a continuous weld for a patch,how you do it is your own choice as long as it looks its welded all round that’s the extent of our interest and to be fair if that’s the only hole in your mini then congrats,i would suggest looking round the valance in the vicinity of the teardrop mounts/tie bars for a start……

Ha ha fraid not. Rear subframe is a bit crusty. And there is a similar hole on other sill. Around teardrop mounts seems ok. There is a bit under the headlamps but it looks to be over 30cm from teardrop mounts.

The battery box has a bit along one edge. Is that likely to be an issue if perforated?

the battery box(from memory)is within 12″of the rear sub mounts where they bolt thru the floor as is most of the rear valance area and sometimes the rear shock mounts as well,check the n/s/r inner wing around the shock mount while your at it,they rot behind the fuel tank(as well as pretty much everywhere else!)would take too long to list the main spots,just work your way along…..
