MOT Steering Test: What Is Checked and What Can Fail?
The steering system is a critical part of the MOT test. An MOT tester checks the steering wheel, steering column, steering gear, steering linkages and power steering system to make sure the vehicle can be steered safely and reliably.
The MOT steering test looks for excessive wear, free play, insecure or damaged components, power steering faults and other defects that could affect the driver’s ability to control the vehicle.
Some steering defects result in a Major MOT failure, while more serious problems that significantly affect safe steering can be classified as Dangerous.

How is steering checked during an MOT?
The precise inspection depends on the design of the vehicle.
The tester can inspect components from above and below the vehicle and apply loads to steering components to identify excessive wear or movement.
Approved wheel play detectors may also be used.
The steering can be operated from side to side while components are examined for movement, wear and security.
The wheels may also be turned from lock to lock so that the tester can check that the steering operates correctly and does not foul other parts of the vehicle.
Power steering systems are inspected with the system operating where appropriate.

The steering gear includes components such as the steering rack or steering box and associated mechanisms.
The tester assesses the steering gear for excessive roughness, wear, movement and other defects that could affect its operation.

A steering system that feels rough, tight or inconsistent should therefore be investigated before the vehicle is presented for an MOT.
Steering rack and steering gear security
The steering rack or steering box must be securely attached to the vehicle.
The tester checks the steering gear itself as well as its mounting points and fixings.
The condition of the surrounding vehicle structure can also be important because serious corrosion or damage around a steering mounting can compromise the security of the system.

Will a power steering leak fail an MOT?
It can.
The significance of the leak and the condition of the system determine the result.
A low power steering fluid level can result in a Minor defect, while an empty reservoir is more serious.
A power steering system malfunction or qualifying leak can result in a Major defect.
If a power steering problem adversely affects the vehicle’s steering, the defect can become Dangerous.
If you notice fluid underneath the front of the vehicle or regularly need to top up the power steering reservoir, have the system checked before the MOT.
Steering wheel
The steering wheel itself is inspected for security and condition.
The tester checks for excessive movement between the steering wheel and column and examines the wheel for damage or looseness that could compromise steering.

Excessive free play in the steering can indicate wear in the steering system.
The tester can check this by moving the steering wheel and assessing how far it turns before movement occurs at the road wheels.
The acceptable amount depends on the construction of the steering system and other relevant factors.

Can excessive steering play fail an MOT?
Yes.
Excessive steering free play is a Major defect.
If the amount of play is so severe that safe steering is affected, it can be classified as Dangerous.
If you can move the steering wheel noticeably from side to side without the front wheels responding, the steering should be inspected before the MOT.
Electronic power steering (EPS)
Electronic power steering is now fitted to a large proportion of modern vehicles.
The MOT inspection includes relevant electronic steering systems and warning indications.
If an EPS malfunction indicator lamp shows a system malfunction, this can result in an MOT failure.

MOT steering defect categories
The MOT uses defect categories according to the nature and severity of the problem.
Minor
A Minor defect does not have a significant effect on vehicle safety or the environment.
The vehicle can still pass its MOT, although the defect should be repaired.
Major
A Major defect results in an MOT failure.
Dangerous
A Dangerous defect represents a direct and immediate risk to road safety or has a serious environmental impact.
The vehicle fails its MOT and should not be driven until the dangerous defect has been repaired.
