Testers Warned: Miss the 31 March Deadline and Risk Suspension and Lost Revenue

MOT testers and garage owners are being urged to act now as the 31 March annual training deadline fast approaches. Failure to complete mandatory training and pass the annual assessment by this date will result in immediate suspension from testing, with serious consequences for workshop productivity and revenue.

What’s at Stake?

Under DVSA requirements, all MOT testers must complete at least three hours of annual training and pass an assessment before the end of the MOT year on 31 March.

If this is not completed in time, tester status is automatically suspended from 1 April. This means testers cannot carry out MOTs until they have completed additional steps to regain approval.

For many independent garages, this can bring operations to a halt overnight.

Immediate Impact on Workshops

The consequences of missing the deadline go far beyond compliance. For workshops relying on one or two testers, suspension can mean:

  • Immediate loss of MOT income
  • Reduced workshop utilisation
  • Loss of follow-on repair work
  • Customer disruption and reputational damage

In some cases, garages may be unable to offer MOTs at all until tester status is reinstated.

Understanding the Deadline

A common misunderstanding is that MOT training follows the calendar year. In reality, it follows the financial year:

  • MOT year: 1 April – 31 March
  • Deadline: Midnight, 31 March

Any training or assessments completed after this date will count towards the next year, not the one just missed.

What Happens if You Miss It?

If the deadline is missed, tester status is suspended immediately. To regain approval, testers must:

  • Complete the required annual training
  • Pass the annual assessment
  • Pass a DVSA demonstration test
  • Provide a valid DBS check (if required)

This process can take several weeks, meaning extended downtime for both the tester and the workshop.

Compliance Scenarios

Scenario Outcome Next Steps
Training and assessment completed before 31 March Tester remains authorised No action required
Training done but assessment not passed Suspension from 1 April Pass assessment and complete reinstatement
Training incomplete Suspension from 1 April Complete training, assessment, and DVSA demo test
Everything complete but DBS missing Suspension remains Submit DBS and await clearance

What You Should Do Now

  • Check your training log on the MOT Testing Service (MTS)
  • Ensure at least 3 hours of training is recorded
  • Book and complete your annual assessment immediately
  • Confirm your pass certificate is uploaded before 31 March
  • Audit all testers within your business

Leaving it until the last minute increases the risk of missing the deadline, especially if retakes are needed.

Industry Warning

Industry bodies and training providers are warning that thousands of testers risk non-compliance each year. The impact is not gradual, it is immediate.

Once the deadline passes, testing stops. For many businesses, this means lost revenue from day one.

Final Reminder

This is not an administrative formality, it is a legal requirement. Missing the deadline results in automatic suspension, and reinstatement is neither quick nor simple.

With the 31 March cut-off approaching, the message is clear: complete your training, pass your assessment, and make sure everything is logged, or risk your ability to test.
